My chicks are two weeks old, I have some that are growing rapidly and some that look like runts. The ones that are growing so rapidly, look like their backsides are swollen, they also have swelling around their necks. The swelling is right in the middle or off to one side and they also have some diarrhea. This morning I found one of my chicks with his leg twisted back behind him. I don't know if this is related about four days ago I found my boys feeding them a whole bunch of worms. The chicks are all very active and eating and drinking well. Do I have a problem starting. Please help!!
Tracey, what kind of chicks are they? I have some cornish x that are the same age as yours and they also look like that.. the swollen neck is their 'crop' full of feed and their bums just get big from eating like they do.. I have to limit their feed intake to prevent leg problems and I've lost a couple that couldn't walk. Worms will make their poop a little runny, especially a lot of worms if they're not used to them. I think that almost any new food (like grass and bugs) will change their poop a little too. how is the chick with the twisted leg?
It would probably be better for small chicks to stick with starter feed, grit, and clean water. Any feeding or care by children should be carefully supervised at all times.
