What does a cushion comb look like? I am familiar with single and rose but not many others. My one silky is supposed to have a walnut comb. Is there a web site I can go to that has good pictures of the various comb types that I could look at to get an idea of what they look like? Thanks for any help.
Good question! I'd like that info too!
Cushion combs kind of look like a rose comb but ummm...smaller and more petite. Also, it is situated more on the frontal part of the chicken's head (the forehead), while the rose comb is larger and goes from the beak to the midpoint of the skull.
Great, post them pics, we luv em! (and thanks for the info! learn something new almost everyday here on "The Coop") Too bad they don't have "Coop" T-shirts!
The way the Standard describes cushion combs is it is just a smooth walnut comb. The combination of Pea comb and Rose comb form a button type comb that does not extend past half way over the skull. Some Pea combs will have this limit, but not all. Rose combs usually extend across the skull. There are modifiers for Rose comb that smooth the normally bumpy surface. This type of rose comb seems to be coming into fashion for Wyandottes in the US. The same modifiers probably combine with walnut to smooth the surface of the comb.
I was just studying the standard, and i noticed something that i had been pondering for a while. They have a section in the standard that says Commom Comb Types. I know the Chantacler, a rare breed, is the only breed that has a cushion comb. Then why is it listed as common? I had also noted this with the strawberry comb. The only breed that has this particular comb type is ths malay, a rare oriental breed.
what is the real color of the comb

I'm not sure what sites have pics of this type of comb, but one breed that does have a cushion comb is a breed called "Chantecler". Chanteclers are an American breed, there are 2 varieties of them, they are used for eggs and for meat, and their prevalence is "rare".
Try searching Yahoo or Altavista...hope this info helps. Perhaps I'll take pictures of some chickens with cushion combs and post them here...

Cushion combs are probably just walnut PPRR with modifiers to smooth the surface.
