pheasant/chicken hybrids

The Classroom @ The Coop: Poultry Breeding/Genetics: pheasant/chicken hybrids

I know that ring-neck pheasant and chickens can mate and have offspring. But what I would like to know is...

what percentage of the 2nd generation are fertile?

how hard are thay to breed?

and can any type of pheasants mate with chickens to produce a large number of fertile offspring besides jungle fowl?

Thanks for your comments,
Neal

Hi Neal, from what I understand, these hybrids are sterile. Just like mixing horses and donkeys, you get a mule, which cannot reproduce. I have seen pics of the pheasant/chicken cross. It's not a very attractive bird. I cannot remember exactly where I saw the pics but if I come across them, I'll post the address here on this thread.

Neal, HannahH is correct. 100% of offspring will be sterile. The ones we produced wouldn't even lay eggs for us. We used a Ringneck male and a game hen to produce ours, but I have heard that true Aracaunas (rumpless & tufted, not mutts) are good to use also. Only about 20% of the eggs hatched from the initial cross. I swore I had some pictures of the ones we had, but I can't seem to find them. I'll let you know if I come across them.
