Various 'styles' of barring ...

The Classroom @ The Coop: Poultry Breeding/Genetics: Various 'styles' of barring ...
By Anonymous on Tuesday, December 4, 2001 - 06:20 pm:

We have hatched a new generation in our Black
Barred project. I'll have to take some pictures and
post them when I get my other computer back!
(That's why my posts are now so narrow... this is
an iMac and internet explorer 5.0 is very different on
the iMac than on the Windoze machines.)

We have a number of black barred birds that have
barring that is very 'diffuse'. They are really
attractive birds ... their barring is smudgy and very
wide. They are very clearly barred, but the barring
is not anything like what one sees in any standard
breeds. ... for some reason they remind me of
Milano cookies from Pepperidge farms... I'll post
some pictures when I can get my other computer
back. One smudgy barred bird is even brown with
this smudgy barring.... They're really pretty .

When are you getting your other puter back?

Thank you for your post, HannahH. They keep
promising me, but then when the day comes, it
isn't ready. I hope to get it back this weekend.

These barred chicks (now about 6 weeks old) are
really pretty. I am impressed with the range of
'barred-ness' ... They're all clearly barred, but some
are sharply barred with narrow white stipes while
others are smudgy with very broad white stripes...
Some are so diffusely barred as to be 'wavy'
almost.

I am really crippled without my other computer. My
scanner and camera don't work onthis iMac.....

Wow that sounds really cool,

I am 13 years old and am very interested in genetics. i am planning a number of projects on genetics, poultry genetics. If you could send me an e mail of how you did this it would be greatly appreciated.

As far as standard bred birds go, there are no "styles" of barring as per the standards of both the APA and the ABA. You have 'cuckoo' birds and 'barred' birds. Barred birds must have a straight bar of black and white, and the description for barring holds for all birds that are called "barred", whether then be plymouth rock, OE, or otherwise.

Cuckoo (with its chevron shape) is a different matter.

I hope that helps. Read the standards.
