For Infomaniac and Rokimoto

The Classroom @ The Coop: Poultry Breeding/Genetics: For Infomaniac and Rokimoto
By Paul Gonzalez (Pgncluck) on Saturday, December 29, 2001 - 12:15 am:

This may have been posted here before, but since you two seem to be in the know as far as chickens are concerned, do either of you know a source for Lamona chickens? Can you still get them or are they extinct? I, along with another fella, would love to get some. Also, are there any more white Dominiques still available anywhere? I may not know my genetics but I would like to help preserve a rare breed. Thanks and I will try to learn more on the genetics end.

Paul, I really don't know much about rare breeds.
There is a rare breed 'club' or board I used to
belong to, but cancelled my membership. There
may be people on the rare breed board that could
help.

I'm sure Rokimoto, CJR, Hannah or other readers
can help here. My family has spoken with the
people at the Sand Hill Preservation Center
(563-246-2299). They have taken it on themselves
to preserve rare breeds of poultry. They have
Dominiques, Chanteclers, Iowa Blues, Black JJs
and many other breeds.

It might be worth a try to give Sand Hill a call ... if
you don't find your Lamonas, I'd bet that Sand Hill
would have good suggestions for possible
sources.

The Dominiques that Sand Hill advertises in their
catalog are barred. But, I believe one could make
white Dominiques fairly easily by just breeding
them to something with dominant white then select
back for type. One just needs to introduce a black
inhibitor.

Good luck!

Paul, the Feathersite has pictures of white
Dominiques:

and I believe Barry took the picture. you can e-mail
him and he usually returns his mail.

Barry writes that he took pictures of the White
Dominiques in 1998, so they're probably not
extinct.

I saw an ad for Lamonas a decade ago in the Hen House Herald. There was a group trying to preserve the breed. I don't know if they are still around. Glenda Heywood edits the National Poultry News, now (Http://www.NationalPoultryNews.com). There are Rare breed conservation groups. Their web pages have been given in the Breeds section, but I don't have any on hand. You'd have to sift through the posts or try a web search.
