Andalusion V Self blue

The Classroom @ The Coop: Poultry Breeding/Genetics: Andalusion V Self blue

I am shipping in some blue hamburg chicks. They are Andalusion blue. this means I should get all 3 colors, right? I am confident I can work out that breeding, but I am reading over my notes and trying to work out what happens if I introduce my Blk. Hams. (which have excellent type) to improve conformation in the blue strain. I know the blacks have been bred pure black for many years, thay have on occassion produced an birchen offspring.

The only problem with crossing in the Blacks from a non blue line is that if the Hamburgs have the blue laced type you can loose the lacing by crossing to blacks that do not have the genes for lacing. The laced blue Andalusians may have the CoCo PgPg MlMl that normal laced breed like Wyandottes have. If your black line does not have these genes you can mess up your lacing.

One area I have a promlem is, what are my blacks. are they E(nigrum),MI(melonotic),EsuperscriptR(birchen). I at times become very frustrated. I have for too long, under stimulated my brain. or Blame it on the sixties! The breeder of the blues just told me his blues produce 75%+ blue offspring on consistent basis? My thinking is it would be ok to use my blacks in the blue breeding but none of the blues or their offspring in my pire black program. thankyou

Thankyou Rokimoto, I did not see your post when I began my latest post. Do you mean the blue will be ok, but there will be no lacing. I guess I assumed all Andalusian blu was laced.

Carefoot presented some data that indicated that the lacing on the Andalusian Blues was due to the same laced pattern on Columbian Wyandottes. It is just that when you have the E allele and blue you get a gray feather with a black lace. Your Hamburgs could have birchin or E. The only way to tell is if you cross them to wild-type and you get birchin females. The male hybrids may show some color in their hackles, but the females that are Ee+ will be nearly totally black, while ERe+ hens will look birchin. Blacks that are based on birchin have more black enhancers that turn the hackle and saddle black. These black enhancers may darken your blues too much if you crossed them to your blues.

Rokimoto, Thankyou. I have not yet ordered the blues because I keep thinking of another project which would interesr me.I wonder about using Blk. Rosecombs to create a bantam hamburg. They both have the same color feather and round earobes which are white rosecombs, and similar tail. The challenge is size and length of back and carriage to a degree. It would seem I could keep less birds with the bantam project. What would be your thoughts?
