I have some mallards and pekins who decided to "get together" and create some mallard/pekins. Does anyone know if the offspring will be able to reproduce? We heard that the second string would be sterile.
The babies would be able to have babies.
Sanahamma, Have you seen the motley ducks that inhabit many city parks?? Ducks are not discriminating! CJR
The wild mallard is the progenitor species of all domestic ducks except muscovy ducks that appear to be an independent domestication event. It is like domestic dogs being able to mate with wolves. They are the same species.
All Mallard descendant ducks will interbreed, producing fertile offspring. The Muscovy duck is the only domestic breed of duck that is not a descendant of the Mallard duck, therefore, if a Muscovy breeds with a Mallard, the offspring will be infertile (referred to as Mules and Hinnies). See the following web page for great Muscovy information and a good explanation of this occurence.
Ooops, I forgot one thing. Yes, they should be able to fly. They may or may not migrate though.
Also, will these ducks be able to fly?
