The Classroom @ The Coop: Game and Wild Fowl: Turkeys And Chickens together?

Have read in several places that turkeys shouldn't be raised even on the same farm as chickens due to a parasite or disease called blackhead. Apparently, the chickens can carry this thng without really being affected by it but it is fatal for turkeys. Any truth to this or any one know anything about this. ANy info would be greatlt appreciated. Thanks

This is supposedly true! I just purchased a book called The Storey Guide to Raising Fowl. It states never to raise them together for just that reason. See if you can find the book...it's excellent. Good luck!

I have heard that here at the coop and from other chicken and turkey raisers as well. I don't know that they should be separated THAT much, but they at least should be in separate buildings. I have heard of the term "blackhead" but I don't have any books to read up on it (Never raised poults):( I might have to invest in a couple books soon.

Donna, i have read about turky and chickens together and that there are some good things about keeping them together, but blackhead is a risk. Ask a vet if there is a test you can do to see if the chickens you want to mix with turkeys have it.

Thanks for all the info and opinions. The place I read about not having them together was in the Storey book. The ones I had together outside were two older turkey poults too large for the cage I had inside with the rest. The chickens in there were also poults of 10 and six weeks old. The turks are now out in their own condo. I also had a chick in a cage inside next to the turks. He was the only one who hatched and was so lonely and chirped so loudly, but was too small to put in with them. He seemed much happier next to them and quieted down. He ended up with a companion 21 days later when another only hatched. I have this broody hen who keeps trying to hatch. I candled the eggs about day 18 and each time only saw movement in one egg, so I popped it into the incubator to give it a better chance to live and both times they did hatch. She is on another batch now. Started out with 21 eggs and is down to 6. I candled them the other day, but couldn't detect any movement. Hard to tell sometimes with brown eggs. They should hatch Friday, if at all. If not she is going back in the coop with the rest of the flock. Three times trying is quite enough and I need the hutch where she is setting for the mother rabbit who I need to wean from her babies.
anyway thanks for the info.
