Dirt and grass? What are you raising them on? In your yard? I keep my chicks in a wire cage for the begginning of their life so I don't have a problem with this except when they've grown up. Then I just raise the waterer and the water stays clean.

We put our waterers up on plastic bread trays or wooden palets. The chickens jump up easily, even chicks and its just high enough to keep most of the debris out of the water.

We keep our waterers at neck level and that works well with very little being kicked into the water. Outside we have a large metal tub for water and when the chicks were too short to deal with it, we built "steps" with concrete blocks and they figured that out in just about an hour. Now they're tall enough that they don't need the "steps". If none of that will work, you might try throwing down loose straw or hay around the waterer. They will still kick that up but it's much cleaner (and easier to pick out) than grass and dirt!
