I am a sophomore in high school and I have been thinking alot about where to go to college. I want to major in either fisheries or poultry. I am having a hard time finding things to major in in poultry. Could anyone give me some ideas of some poultry majors and colleges that have good poultry programs?

You ought to check and see if there are any college fairs going on in your area. If I remember correctly (from the time I went to a college fair), there is a college in Japan and the west coast where they're offering majors in fisheries.

Trox, Oregon State University used to have a very good Poultry program (I won't tell you how long it has been since I rode my bike out to the Poultry Bldg 3x a week for 8 o'clock lectures) And they have a Marine Biology Program that is also TOPS, Fisheries?, probably. They have a campus and boats at Coos Bay. OSU will send information to you. Or, if you send me your address, I will ask them to send it to you. CJR

Michigan State has a poultry science department, and some excellent people on the faculty. Majoring in poultry science usually does not focus on backyard poultry, of course. You should be able to request info from the MSU website.
Dr. Okimoto, does your school have an undergraduate major in poultry science?

I know that the University of Illinois has a Poultry Science program. It focuses on the commercial facet of poultry (egg & meat production), but they have excellent staff and have produced some amazing birds. They have produced a line of Hew Hampshires that will are almost as efficient meat producers as the commercial cornishXrocks, but the mortality rate isn't as high. They are HUGE! And they lay well, also. The U of I is a very agricultural based university, so I would bet they might have programs involving fisheries, as well, although that is a more common operation in the southern part of Illinois. The U of I is an excellent school, I would suggest researching it as an option. Good luck in your endeavor!
