Well, our 12 pullets that we've raised since they were a day old are now starting to lay! Got my first tiny egg last Saturday and that girl has now laid 4 more, each getting slightly bigger. Another laid a soft-shell egg. They're on layer ration as of two weeks ago so I expect all of this to iron out pretty soon.
Susie--That first egg--even after more years than I like to remember--is always exciting. So is the first chick from a hatch.(And tonight the eggs under a little hen are "peck, peck, pecking!") There may be chicks in the morning, the first for this pullet. And also, today, a 6 year old hen layed her first egg since last summer! That is exciting, as her laying has tapered off to very few per year. It is miraculous every time, every egg, every chick! I am not an early riser--but tomorrow morning I'll wake up and arise in the dark! Thanks for sharing! CJR
You shoulda seen when I got my first egg....or should I say when my hens got their first egg. I was literally bouncing off the ceiling with excitement. Although I haven't hatched my own eggs yet, I can imagine how exciting THAT is. Boy, its almost like being a parent. LOL.
CJR -- I hope your hatch went well! We haven't tried to hatch eggs in years but we are planning on doing some later this year.
Anyway, does it ever NOT excite you? We've kept chickens for years and have been through this chick-to-hen thing many times but I still get all excited and fascinated just like the first time. I'm running out to the chicken house 2 to 3 times a day, hoping for an "extra" egg!! :-)
Just wanted to share. I need to take some pictures and show off my girls! I'll try to do that soon.

Josh -- yes, it is a bit like being a parent! Or a grandparent if you hatch eggs. I hope you get the chance to try that one day. It is very exciting!!
