Advice on a broody hen

The Classroom @ The Coop: Poultry Management: Advice on a broody hen

My hen has been trying to set on some eggs but the other hens keep shoving her out of her nest to lay. Should you move her into another pen or will it upset her setting? Will she go back to setting on the eggs if moved?

Jcobb5, By all means, move her to a quiet, private place, nest and all. But are there eggs that will have been layed since she started setting?? These will hatch at later time, and cause great trouble, as she must leave the nest when her first clutch hatch!! So date or mark the eggs she started setting with, if you haven't already done so and may still be able to do so (they will be a little worn or shiny from moving them--or slightly soiled from the nest material.) MOVE her AT NIGHT, and if possible to keep her in a small enclosure, with food and water available right nearby, she can can set and hatch without interruption. And if your other hens are likely to start setting soon, you might wish to date all the eggs you gather, and save them, so you can give each hen the number of eggs you want her to hatch, all at once, and the date, too. can go on your calendar--21 days until hatch--no surprises~!!~ Good luck, CJR

We have a hen that started to set yesterday. It would be nice to have some new chicks so we were gonna let her do it and see what happens. She's setting in an upper level nest box. Should we move her to a nest box on the ground? Should we move her out of the hen house all together? It's a very large hen house, ( it's an old shed).
I've never done this before so any advice is appreciated.

Thanks, Jane

Jane,
You may have a problem with the broody hen if she is sitting in the nesting boxes that the other hens normally use. As time goes by, some of the other hens will, undoubtedly, try to lay in the same nest with the broody hen which will result in broken eggs. Also, when the boody hen gets off the nest for feed and water, another hen may take her nest...when she returns and her nest is not available, she will go to another nest in which eggs have been laid, not realizing that those eggs are not the ones that she has been setting on.
I always wait until my broody hens stay on the nest all night. The next night I put her in an enclosed nest with a couple of eggs to make sure that she is all settled in. If she stays in the isolated nest, I put the hatching eggs under her. I always use a nesting box with a top on it and the opening on the front, so that the other chickens can't disturb her. She is more likely to return to a separate nesting box than one used by the other layers.
Good Luck.
