Why did the introduction of a new pair cause fighting problem?

The Classroom @ The Coop: Poultry Management: Why did the introduction of a new pair cause fighting problem?

We added a pair of silver sebrights to our flock of white jap black tails. The roosters started fighting upon the introduction to the point of drawing blood on each other. But after awhile, the agression seemed to stop. Is this a sign they may get along in the long run? Or will the fighting continue? There are four hens and the two roosters. If the fighting does continue, should we seperate the roosters?

Yes, if you do not want damaged combs, wattles., even eyes! They may come to an "agreement". But do you plan to raise chicks? The dominant rooster will sire all the chicks. I never add new birds. It is just like moving a new family in your house, with no announcement or preparation--not what you would like! Your japs have established a home. Very demeaning to add a new "head of the family! And so they fight for dominance. Some breeds will fight to kill, and some few roosters will become passive, but not a very satisfying life for a rooster- or the hens, either! Good luck, CJR
