I have Pilgrim geese and was thinking about trying Embdens but when I was looking at them I noticed that the Emdens are VERY similar to the male Pilgrims. I was just wondering if anyone knows a way to tell the male Embdens from the male Pilgrim geese. Any pointers are appreciated.
Hi - There are some ways to tell the difference, if the breeds are true to type. Pilgrims are generally shorter and smaller, classed as a medium sized goose, whereas embdens are heavy class, taller, heavier. It is permissible, and often seen, for male pilgrims to have gray feathers on their back or tail or under wings, etc., especially when young. Young embdens sometimes exhibit gray feathers until their first molt, but true embdens will have no gray feathers eventually. Embdens have startlingly blue eyes, pilgrims more of a gray-blue. Hope this helps. It's only easy if your breeds are true types! Good luck
