I am trying to find information on Call ducks(breeding, colors, genetics, etc.)I have chickens but not ducks. I am very interested in the calls and would like to learn more about them.Does anyone know what their temperment is like? Can you recommend any websites or books about them? I would appreciate any information!
Call ducks are absolutely charming. They have the best temperments and can become wonderful pets. They are not flighty like other ducks and don't usually fly away or fly around. There are many colors, only a few are recognized by the APA (gray, white, pastel, blue). I know of a website that is run by one of the top call duck breeder in the nation. His name is Lou Horton. Here is the address to an article that I found in the library at The-Coop:
We have been into calls for about three years and love them. The females can be rather loud, however. We have a book "the call duck breed book" by Darrel Sheraw which we purchased at a poultry show. It has a lot of good information. Most of the poultry catalogs have a great selection of books. We have black east indies and gray calls. The above writer is right; Lou Horton has great birds for sale. Good Luck and have fun.
I can only agree with the above replies. We have also kept Calls for three years, and they are charming, friendly, and bright. The females are noisy, but this adds to their charm, though I guess close neighbours may not agree. Although we allowed ours to roam for the first year, the second year Mr. Fox, and other predators, polished off just about all the sitting females and their broods. Now we're penning most of our Calls - too heartbreaking to see such perky characters picked off, one by one. Best wishes.
Thank you to everyone who wrote, you were all of great help and I appreciate it alot!
(This is my first time posting so I hope I have'nt posted it five times trying to figure it out.)
Thanks!
