I am looking to add another member to my family, and would like a "house duck." I have owned a female mallard, but she stayed in our backyard. I would like a duck that is tame enough to stay in my house. I need suggestions on breed types that are best suited for this. I have had suggestions of a pekin, and a rouen, but I need "experts" on the subject to tell me what they think. Thanks in advance. Please email me directly.
The tame part you can take care of by raising a duckling by hand, but are you sure you want a duck's deposits on your carpet? Because they need water to wash in, they alwiys soak the floor around the pan or puddle. To be frank about it, they make a lot of duck dirt.
They can be happy in the house But for you to be happy I suggest a diaper. You can do this by taping a small plastic bag to its butt. I have never done this but I saw online a girl who did this & she lived in the city. They do poop alot. Good Luck.
Yes there are others who do this! I made a web site that compiles information on keeping a pet duck in your house. It includes links to 2 people who have made duck diapers - one plastic baggies and the other fabric. There are pictures as well instructions for the plastic baggie one. The page is under construction but check out the diaper page, as that information is up right now.
This spring I got three Pekin ducklings. They are now big and all males. Sometimes they honk or snort and then lower their heads and necks into a straight line and run around for a few seconds. What does this mean? Also when they bob their heads to each other what does this mean? Two of them sometimes pick on the third one. The two have orange bills and the third one has a pale pink bill. Its the pale pink billed one that gets picked on mostly when they get into their swimming pool. Is this usual?

We have pekins and think the world of them, even feed them by hand and give them names, but I dont think I'd want them in the house.
