Does anyone know if wild wood ducks return to their birth place each year? I raised a quartet of them last summer after a neighbors cat raided their nest. We checked with our local wildlife rehabilatator and he told us that as long as we didn't pen them or restrict their leaving they were fine in the yard with our runner ducks. Around a month after they started to fly the disappeared for a couple days. They returned a few times then left for good. I just wondered if I should expect to see them again next spring? Anyone have any ideas?
Most wild birds and water fowl return to their same place each year---IF THEY CAN. Weather patterns, storms, etc. can "fowl" up their migration routes. They will be much more elusive on their return, however, wiser, and because they will be tuned to nesting, and because wood ducks have a harder time finding nesting holes, they will be more secretive--probably will only see the males in the late spring, early summer evenings. Still, it is exciting! Good luck, CJR
