Hi,
I want to know what breeds of ducks are:
Mellow
hardy
good with kids
I am 9, and want the right breeds of ducks for me.
Thanks
dane.

Hi Dane - most breeds of ducks are pretty hardy (except sometimes Call ducks). We have the larger breeds - rouens, pekins and crested ducks, and have always found them to be very mellow, friendly, and just plain fun. If you spend a lot of time with them when they are ducklings (all of them together - don't just single one or some out for attention), they will enjoy your company, too. Good luck - Colleen

I like India Runner ducks most of all. They are a tall slim duck - some people call them a bowling pin with legs. I think the key is to get them young and spend as much time with them as you can, so they will be tame. Be sure to feed them starter food at first and keep their water as clean as you can.
Runners are kind of unusual too so they can be a great source of fun.

Hi Colleen.
You talk to my mom at the Houdan place! It's Deeds.
I want to know about those Rouens. What do they look like? I know I would spend a lot of time with them when they are ducklings. Mom says I have to start digging the pond. I will look up Pekins and Rouens and Indian Runners at feather site.
Maggie I saw some indian runner ducklings at the feed store. They are so cute and funny!
Well, gotta go. My brother wants to use the computer.
Talk to ya later.
Dane

Hi Dane - I've had trouble getting this part of the board up! Rouens are colored just like mallards, but a lot bigger - almost as big as pekins. My son, Devin (he's 12) has 4 rouens - Beau, Wally, Cutie, and Waddle. They follow him everywhere and "help" him with chores! Oh, are they ever a big help! (not). They are so funny and friendly, each one a different personality. Beau is in charge, Wally more to himself, Waddle is quiet, but waits impatiently when we tip buckets to be the first to get the worms. Cutie is very noisey and bossy and full of herself. We have a lot of fun pretending to be those four ducks in conversation when we're waiting in the car. Whatever ducks you choose, you'll really enjoy them! Good luck, Dane. Colleen

Hi Colleen
Me and my mom get laughs out of pretending to be the chickens and the turkey, of course. I was just kinda thinking about my ducks and from what you said about those Rouens now I can't decide between 3 of them. They are Runner ducks, Cayugas, and Rouens. Well, talk to ya later,
Dane

Hey, Dane - Isn't it so hard to decide? All three are great. We've never had runners, but we know people who do, and have a great time with them. We had cayugas for years and years. They are a most beautiful duck - that fantastic blue and green sheen to their feathers is stunning to look at. They liked to fly, and I always felt bad clipping their wings to keep them in the pens. That's a good thing about runners and rouens - can't lift off the ground! I think runners and rouens are more friendly than cayugas, too. Be sure and let us know what kind you decide on! Talk later - Colleen

Hi Colleen.
What about blue swedish and those black east indies? I think that Rouens are kinda cool. My dad doesn't think they are the the coolest duck in the world. I know why runners can't get off the ground. . . because they're so tall it is hard for them to get off the ground! (ha ha ha!) Well now all I have on my list are the runners. Those might be the ones I'll get. Well, better go.
Dane

Hey Dane - Blue Swedish are cool ducks - easy going and big. I like the way they're marked. We have crested ducks marked that way. We've had east indies for a long time. They're pretty calm when they're used to people, really pretty, great flyers! They're also pretty small, so they don't make nearly the mess the big ducks do. Finished that pond yet? hahahaha. Take care - let me know what you choose! Tell your dad ALL Ducks are cool!!! hahaha. Colleen

By Dane on Tuesday, April 25, 2000 - 12:57 am:

Hi Colleen
Well, I think I might be getting runners. They seem like the only ones on my list, because all the other ducks I have thought of haven't turned out to be what I'm looking for. Oh! Except for blue swedish. Well, I will just have to see what the feed store has. Not much selection there huh? hahahaha! I haven't even really started the pond yet. First I need some help.
Well, Gotta go.
Talk to ya later.
Dane

Hey Dane - What are you looking for in a duck? Anything special? If you have your heart set on a kind you can't get at the feed store, and your mom and dad agree, I can maybe try to search out some people close to you with what you're looking for through people I know who travel all over to shows, even on your coast! If you want, and your parents say it's o.k. I know what you mean about the pond - time for a "pond party". hahahaha Take Care - Colleen

Hi Colleen.
I am kinda interested in those black east indies. All the other kind of ducks I want are runners and blue swedish which I can get at the feed store. I better talk to my mom and dad if I can search for some. My mom says I have to work on the pond first. Maybe some day my mom will have time to help me. Talk to you later.

Hi Dane,i was your age when i decided to get some ducks.I'm almost 13yrs old and i still have one of my origonal ducks. As far as i'm concerned every duck is friendly. So just pick the duck you realy like.I decided after i had ducks for about 2 yrs that i wanted to make a career out of them, and guess what?,it came true,i am a known breeder of runners and call ducks.I am not a realy big breeder, but big anough at this point. What's unusual about this,is that a 12yr old is duck breeder. Most people think i'm throwing my life away, but if it's working and i enjoy being with ducks it's worth it.Just telling you what can happen when you get into ducks.HOPE this helps you,Callpen
