Sexing Mallard ducklings?

The Classroom @ The Coop: Waterfowl: Sexing Mallard ducklings?

I am wondering when I will be able to tell what sex my ducklings are? When they start feathering, with the male have his adult plumage or will he look like the female till he matures?
Thanks!

Maureen,

When they are feathered out you might try looking at their breast feathers. The females will have a streaked pattern & the males will have a dotted pattern. This might take a little practice but soon you'll be able to see the difference.

The most accurate way to sex them is vant sexing but at 8-10 weeks of age they'll get their adult voices. The females will have a loud harsh QUACK & the males a softer whispery quack.

Males normally get their pretty colors in the fall it's called the nuptial plumage (breeding colors) & in the summer they go through an eclipse molt where they resemble females.

Enjoy your waterfowl. :-)

I have also heard that there is a difference in the width of the bill at 2-4 days old.
