sick/blind silkie

The Classroom @ The Coop: Poultry Health Archive 2 (older): sick/blind silkie

We recently noticed our black silkie appeared to be blind in one eye as it began tilting/twisting its neck in an apparent attempt to use only one eye. Upon closer inspection, we noticed the bird's nostrils appeared clogged with yellow dried mucous. The eye that we believe may be out of order appears watery and has a milky/cloudy center pupil. The bird eats and drinks well but is a bit slow maybe due to the poor vision. Any help would be appreciated.

sorry to reply so late, but i'm new here. Do any of the other birds have the same symptoms, or is a cold virus circulating through the coop? Perhaps this birds defenses were already down for whatever reason, and it got a simple cold. If the birds immune system was weak to begin with (maybe genetically) then simple colds can run rampant. I don't know very much about antibiotics, but I feel this bird probably needs one.
Unless--maybe the bird has a blocked tear duct. Dirt or dust may have become lodged into the tear duct and caused an infection. Check that possibility out too.
