This summer I hatched out a few Jersey Giant/Australorp crosses. They grew to be big birds with very robust bodies and heavy feathering. One of my birds though, I believe suffered a dislocated leg right at the joint of the "knee". I kept her in a cage with the injury wrapped, but not splinted--she kept moving it around, and now she is out, hobbling around, not in any noticeable pain. I consulted a vet who said basically nothing could be done for her as the injury was likely a result of a lack of vitamins, or her breeding, and if the leg was put back in place, it would probably pop back out again. I have never had this happen before, and there is nothing that she could have hurt herself on in this way. What do you think?
i just had a baby chick born with both legs turned under,,, its only 3 days old and looks pitiful,,, what should i do????
Sassy: As hard as it is to do, you need to destroy this chick. It is deformed and will never get any better. It will probably die before its time and should never be used for breeding purposes if it would survive into adulthood. One of the bad times in th poultry business.......Red Tail Chicken Hawk......
mr red chickenhawk.... as bad as i hate to admit it i think you are right,,,, its gonna be a sad day for me,,,he is so cute,,,, but i will do as you say,,,because your right,,,, thanks for the encouragement,,,, sassy
One of our first roosters pulled his leg out of whack and the vet said some nerve damage too. He just hobbled around happy as could be. We just made sure he got food, etc. and check the foot to make sure he wasn't rubbing it raw by dragging it. Who knows how he did it???
(she is now doing quite well--she layed her first egg last wednesday!)
