WHAT IS IT?

The Classroom @ The Coop: Poultry Health Archive 2 (older): WHAT IS IT?

One of my prized older pullets (named Turkey!) has a red lump the size of a small egg protruding from her...well I don't know "where" it's coming from, but it's hanging out of her rear. It's very irritated all around the area, and there's fluid seeping out and sice it's so cold, it freezes around her vent feathers. I just noticed it, and it was suggested that it might be a prolapsed rectum resulted from trying to push an egg out. I am very worried. Right now, her and the rest of the flock are on Terramycin, the powder. What should I do besides call a vet?

To the person with the prolapsed pullet:
I had the same problem happen a few years back with a black Wyandotte pullet. She was a very good bird and I didn't want to lose her.
A fellow bantam breeder here in Alabama told me to get some Preparation H (the stuff people use for hemorroids). He said put the Preparation H on the prolopse for a couple of days to help shrink it. Then when it is smaller, put on a surgical glove, put plently of Preparation H on the prolapse and gently push it back inside the bird. He said it make take a couple of days before it will go back inside. He stessed to be gentle and to not force the prolapse back into the bird.
I did what he said, (It took me two days to get it to go inside) but it worked, the bird was fine and I have won a couple of shows with her.
Good luck,
Dennis

Thanks for the info! Should she be separated from the other birds though? I tried to separated her in a cage, but she was so insistent on getting back with her friends that I worried she might make the situation worse.
Once again, thanks for the info!

I would keep her separated. When I was a kid and my parents were in the "egg business", one of the hens had a prolapse and before my dad could catch her, some other hens started pecking at the prolapse and killed her as they perforated her intestine (and ended up pulling her intestines out). A grisly sight I'll never forget.
