My hen who had prolapsed is now in from the cold, down in the basement in a small cage with cedar shavings. I contacted the vet about her problem, and he said the most I could do is to apply an antibacterial cream on it every day, and slowly try to push it back in. The problem is, I don't know if it's the whole end, or just a loop that's sticking out. It really began to smell foul, but I have been rinsing the area with salt water every day and it seems to help. Any more suggestions? I tried Prep. H, but it wouldn't stick anywhere.

We had the same problem with a beloved leghorn. She laid tremendous eggs and prolapsed. We soaked her rear in warm slightly sudsy water then gently pushed the prolapse back in. Next time she laid it was out again. she lived for about four months this way. We cut her calcium and tried to reduce her egg production but were unable to do so. We are staying away from leghorns due to the large eggs and have not had that problem again. good luck, glad to hear someone else "hospitalizes" their birds in the basement!
