I have a varied bunch of chickens and some warrens which I bought recently came with a cold. Then I noticed that one or two birds also had the skin around their eyes swelling up. Some got so bad that they couldn't open their eyes.
Mycoplasma Gallisepticum--the chicken version of the cold in humans. You are doing the right thing. MG develops in response to stress, and bringing in birds from outside flocks. They just have not developed an immunity to your local strain of MG.
How do you get rid of starling & sparrows? We have a flock of 28 chickens we let out every day. We have two large trees they have invested. They also find the chicken feed to be a all you can eat diner. Even setting the feed in the chicken coop the sparrows find it. We just put our chicken feed in bowls. Should I use a type of feeder? Any suggestion would be great Thank You
Assuming the sparrows are House Sparrows (English Sparrows), they and the European Starlings are not protected, and you can trap them with "Sparrow traps". I trapped about 60 Starlings and House Sparrows one season and they have never returned to my feeders!! CJR
I am treating them with Tylan (antibiotic) but don't know what is actually wrong with them - Anyone else experienced this or heard of it?
