Gwynn Hallberg, DVM, Oregon State Poultry Vet, passed along this message and asked me to share it with readers of The Coop.

"I just found out last week that Ag Canada is working on cleaning up a rather significant outbreak of Pullorum disease on Vancouver Island. Given the mobile nature of exhibition poultry, birds could easily get exposed and could spread the disease rapidly.

All imported birds need to be either NPIP participants, or tested for the disease within 30 days of entering Oregon."

For readers outside of Oregon, you may wish to check your state's NPIP and import regulations. Regardless, you will certainly want to exercise caution in importing birds from that area.

For more information on this, contact Gwynn Hallberg, DVM ghallber@oda.state.or.us
