My 10 month old R.I. Red roosster named Good Luck Feather is not having good luck at the moment and is quite ill. He is a free range during the day with his 5 hens out and around the barnyard with my horse. Two days ago he did not want to come out of the coop and just layed in the corner. He had difficulty walking and was pretty wobbly. He is seperated and staying in a big cage in my basement with a light for warmth. He is having green loose stools and at this point won't eat anything. The other chickens are fine. I wormed him the first day and he drank an ounce or so of the water. I now am trying to get him to drink water with Tetrmycin in it but he refuses. I'm afraid he doesn't have much time left. Could he possibly have been kicked by my horse and this be the response? Please answer if you have any ideas. THANKS
Anything is possible....look through his feathers for abrasions and the like, if you do suspect he may have gotten kicked. It doesn't sound much like worms because I would think that at least a few of the other chickens would have the same symptoms, if they are always together, eating and digging around in the same things. He may, because of the loose green stool, have an infection of some sort--I had a chicken with the same symptoms, and she didn't make it (not to have you give up hope or anything) and we never found out what it was.
When we received new chicks from the hatchery they recommended adding 3 tablespoons of sugar in a quart of water with the medication to help them deal with the stress of travel. A sick bird is stressed. Perhaps this could give him a little boost. Good luck.
