My bantam hens have white crusty, bumpy, protruding scales on their legs and feet. I like showing my chickens, but now two of my faves can bearly walk.
Audra, Your birds are suffering from Scaley leg mites. I use Campho-phenique,(drug store) applied with an eyedropper. Hold the legs upside down and drop the liquid slowly from toe to heel, seeing that it runs under every scale. Since they are so badly infected, it will take 2-3 or even 4 treatments--4-7 days apart. After one or two time, you may be able to peel the softened crusts off (dispose of the crusts safely, as the mites may have eggs in the crusts). After a week, disinfect your roosts with a solution of Purex (tops, sides and bottoms or make new roosts. When the feet and legs are cleared up, you will want to inspect them at regular intervals, and treat at the first sign of reinfection. Poor birds can really suffer, even die, and you cannot show your birds with any sign of the infection. Good luck, and don't waste time treating them! CJR
Sorry, I haven't been able to get on-line in a while. I'll try the Campho-phenique.

The two bad ones responded well. They can walk a whole lot better. I spent my whole weekend totaly cleaning out the whole coop.
Just one question though.
Can the mites make them chew their own toes off? My hen is doing better, but a while back I noticed one of her toes was black. Then the next day it was gone! This is not everyday behavior.
What's goin' on with that?

HER FEET WHICH SEEM PAINFUL. THEY ARE
NOT BLEEDING. I HAVE RUBBED HER FEET
WITH BAG BALM AND IT SEEMS TO BE IMPROVING. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD BE DOING?
