I have a flock of free range hens and every year they destroy the flowers that I plant. Is there any flowers that they don't find to be a tasty treat, yet won't poison them if they sample it? I don't want to confine them, but I want to enjoy the beauty of flowers without having to invest in fencing for the flowers. Can I have it both ways? Any suggestions?

I also love flowers. We often let our chickens out during the day. Between feasting chickens and hungry rabbits, I've tested many plants and flowers. So far, an insistant snapdragon that reseeds and comes up every year seems to be immune along with California Poppies. Lily of the Nile and other lilies and highly fragrant plants such as Lavendar and Rosemary do okay. The chickens vandalize (minor damage) my Geranium's and Euryop daisy occasionally, but they don't actually eat it, although rabbits will eat the daisy when other food is lacking. I hope you might be able to incorporate some of these plants into your garden. Good Luck. SMR

My Bantams really didn't bother any of my flowers except Impatiens--they love the buds! Now, I have covered runs, so they no longer have the run of the yard and garden, except for brief hours, when I am mowing the grass in their runs! But deer??? That is another story! CJR
