It is pretty late tonight, but I will give ya'll a try. I just got these baby chicks about 5 days, I have never had baby chicks before, They are a 4-H project,The first day,2 of them got wet in thier water, thought we lost them, but warmed them in a towel and they revived quickly,They all grew so qiuckly, I had to get another cage to put them in (25chicks) so, I put 15 of the big ones in one cage and put the other 10 in the smaller cage, Now the smaller ones seem to be acting differently, they want to fly (it looks like) and are picking at thier feathers. Are they unhappy? or unhealthy? The others are calm. They are supposed to be black sexlink chicks, please someone answer me, I don't want to loose any of them or do any thing wrong, I love animals TOO much! I have a few other questions, please, would anyone help me? sharrison@bledsoe.net
Susan, I am certainly not one of the experts but since they all seem to be out of pocket let me see if I can help. The chicks sound like they are in too close quarters and need a big old cardboard box. Cannabalisim will be reduced by the use of a red light instead of the usual white light. Any chick that has been pecked until it has a sore of any kind must be removed and put in a separate place or the others will kill it. Put pine litter in the bottom of the box and a piece of hardware cloth over the top to keep everybody in. Red light is very important in this situation. Good luck! Kat
