I ordered a batch of chicks 10 weeks ago and all have done well and thrived, except one, she has not yet grown in her feathers, naked bird, as we call her has nothing but skin on her back and the front of her neck.
she has underfluff in thin quantities over the rest. The wings have a few sparce feathers but not normal. When you pick her up she beats you with little nubbies. No she has not been picked,I have kept her separate,( Its to cold to go outside naked)
I asked the hatchery about it and they do not know.
Anybody know whats happening? is this genetic?

I have a few red frizzle cochins that I got from a hatchery last spring that looked just the way you describe. They did eventually get some feathers (at about 4 months old) but they never have feathered out completely. I havn't culled them because they seem to be coping with the weather o.k. Living in Nebraska, I was a bit worried but they seem to know enough to stay out of the hot sun and they have lots of fully feathered buddies to huddle with on cold days. Interesting to note they were all roosters, the hens all feathered out very well.

I had an aracauna chick like that, too. She turned out to be a dwarf (normal sized head and body but stubby legs and wings). I would say that the lack of feathering is genetic. She feathered very late, but got them all.
