I have 6 week old RI Red chicks. At what age do I start them on grit?? And when do I begin to give them the calcium for egg shell strength?? This is our first little flock of chicks and we want to do it right.
Thanks so much!!

Marti, Grit- when you feed other than Starter Crumbles, such as grain, bird seed or greens. It is the teeth for other food, Starter has it in it. Oyster Shell- when they begin to lay--and both free choice--they won't overeat. CJR

CJR,
When do they come off the starter feed?? And is this the point when I feed them Mash?? Does the Mash have the grit in it too??? I'm such a newbie to this, I need it spelled out for me, LOL.
thanks,
Marti

I leave my babies on starter feed until they are 5 months old or large enough to hold their own with the old ladies. Then they go directly to laying mash. 5 months is about the age my pullets start laying (or 6).
