Afraid of snow!

The Classroom @ The Coop: Management archive: Afraid of snow!

We live in a snowy area, and every time we get a fresh snowfall, the girls are afraid to go out. Subsequently, they stay indoors and get into trouble. They have been egg eating, and picking, and I even found a bloody egg w/ significant stains in the nest.
We have tried to bribe them w/delicious fresh greens, etc, but they are quite stubborn. We are somewhat new at this, so need a little guidance.

I also live in a snowy area, and at first all my chickens were afraid to get out of the coop. I put all the food and water just outside the door, this made them go out just a little, then I think by doing they got used to snow. Now its doesnt bother them at all. Its actually kind of funny to watch them wade through the deep snow

I put the food outside of there coop and when they were outside of the coop I shut the doors behind them and they are totally used to the snow now

Hi, I'm new here. Heard about y'all over at Countryside Magazine forum (countrysidemag.com)....

We live in Maryland and it has been quite cold here for a longer spell than usual. My chickens (auracanas and red stars and one cochin) didn't want to go on the snow either. We put straw down out side their door and they had no problem. We keep them closed in on bitter days and snowy days and have a light on in the coop all the time to provide heat and light. We don't have windows in the coop in the winter, only during the summer with hardware cloth over the opening. Would like windows but can't right now.

How warm do you have to keep the chicken house to keep the chickens healthy and laying in the winter?
