do any of you bake cornbread and such for your hens ( and roosters ! ) ? I buy the cheapy corn muffin mixes and add powdered milk, eggs and assorted veggies and kitchen scraps and then bake the whole thing in a 9x13 pan. They really love it, and NEVER complain about my cooking ! I was making them grits and oatmeal, but they do not like the messy quality of those...too much beak-wiping required. They have access to layer mash at all times, but they really seem to appreciate the extra goodies. Anyone want to swap hen baking recipes ( FOR the hens, not with the hens ! )
Can you give Organic Peanut Butter to chickens? I have tons of it and nobody in my family likes it. I was thinking of adding corn or something to it.
I don't know about giving it to chickens, but rather than throwing it out you could make suet cakes out of it and feed it to the birds and squirrels. I'm sure a search for suet will bring you some recipes.
Chickens can eat lots of things. I've fed mine all sorts of vegis, pasta, crackers, cheese, pop tarts, and ham. THey eat it all. I've never fed them peanut butter but if you can feed it to other birds you can probly feed it to chickens. JUst don't feed them to many treets or they won't eat their other food right. Hope it helps
Elizabeth,
Hello. I am new, and I am glad I found this site. We raised chickens when I was a girl, but I don't remember all the in's and out's. I do have scars on the back of my hands at the knuckles from getting eggs though!! : ) Anyway, isn't feeding chickens cornbread with eggs in it kinda weird? Like chicken cannabalisim(sp)? Just wondering...
I wouldn't give my chickens too much peanut butter. It's very high in fat. A little bit as a treat would probably be ok.
I almost forgot.

On occaison, when we've run out of feed, I've made cornbread for my girls. They do love it. I would throw in whatever scraps I had on hand too. Don't just crack the eggs in either, crush up the shell and throw it in too.
A cheaper way to go than muffin mixes would be to get some cornmeal and make your own. The recipe on the Yellow Indianhead cornmeal we get sometimes is great and simple too.

I had a chicken die on New Years Eve three years ago.
I only had 4 chickens at that time. The previous fall my chickens were constantly at the wild bird feeder eating the black sunflower seeds.
I had a necropsy done on this chicken to find out the cause of death. It was determined that she died of Fatty Liver Disease. She was too fat! My vet said that I shouldn't feed them too many things that are fatty. And she ate a lot of sunflower seeds.

Also, this is a good thing to know.
Chickens can die from ingesting too much salt. So, if you do feed your chickens people food, try to not give them stuff that has too much salt.
Chicken are really sensitive to the amount of salt they can ingest. It's called Salt poisoning.
