I have three chickens (two pullets and a cockerel) who are eight months old. During the day they free range, I also feed them layer pellets and greens. They seem healthy (scratching, clucking and laying eggs). My question is when should I worm them? I would prefer not to worm them if they don't need it. Also is it necessary to vaccinate them?
Local feed store in your area will tell you. You should worm only once a year, for at least one week.
Yolanda,
Hi Chickenleg,
Chickenleg, There is no set time, just mix it with their fresh drinking water. It won't hurt them, just make sure they are over 6 weeks old.
Also, wait a week after you worm them to eat their eggs. I usually leave the wormer in their water for 24 hours and then treat them again in another week for 24 hours, once or twice per year.
Thanks in advance for your input.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately we don't have a local feed store. I live on an island 30 miles off the coast of Massachusetts. I heard and read conflicting stories about when to worm and vaccinate. I'm new to this and have grown quite attached to my small flock and would hate to have anything happen to them because of my ignorance. If I worm them once a year when is the best time to do it?

No, you don't have to vaccinate them, if you just keep them in one place and away from other chickens, for competition, you might have to. I wouldn't worry about the worming medication, you use only 30ml, l ounce per gallon, that's only about 1 tablespoon of piperzine. If they are free-roaming it is recommended. I would be careful of any greens you give them, make sure you wash them, because they could have worms. Round worms are easy to control, and you will see them right away, because they are big. The once of year worming treatment is just insurance. Some people treat for 1 or 2 days out of the year only. I did it for one week, no problem. My grandparents didn't treat at all, but I didn't really know much in those days, I was only 12. Good Luck, Yolanda
