Eggs for Sale update

I've posted previously that I'm having a hard time finding customers to buy my fresh, free-range eggs.
I then recently contacted this neighborhood bakery which sells fresh bread, donuts, and things like that. I sent them an e-mail asking if they'd be interested in selling my eggs. Something like $1.00 a dozen, they keep half. (I'm not looking for a profit. I just want to help pay for chicken food.)
After a long wait, the owner finally wrote back. He said his concerns are regarding health regulations.
Does anyone know anything about eggs and the qualifications they must meet to be sold in stores? It's not like they have to pastuerized like milk or anything. And they keep fresh for months.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure about where you are, but here for eggs to be sold in a store they have to be from approved sources. Its fine to sell them ourselves, but not for the store-go figure. We have pickled eggs and sold them through the feed store, so I guess its just fresh eggs they are worried about. We originally had the same problem as you, but after causually mentioning that we had fresh eggs to everyone we knew, the calls started coming in. Now there are weeks where we barely have eggs for what we want! Good luck. Mina

Man, I hope I have luck like you. So far only 2 people from my jobs (2 jobs) were interested. That's like out of 50 or so people. Sheesh! And I put some notes in my neighbors' mailboxes as well and no luck. I'm jealous of your good luck!
I like my chicken hobby, but I figured out it cost me at least $20 a month to feed and house them. I'd sure like to earn some of that back!

Sunni,
Check with your local ag center and they should be able to tell you what you need to do.

Some states require that you have your birds tested for salmonella and then they give you a certificate for a clean bill of health if they pass. You could then show the certificate to the store owner and see if that helped. The fee for the testing is not much from what I hear.

Give it time. Word of mouth and all that.

You might see if there is a natural food co-op in your area. Someone there might be interested.

Sunni, it took us about 6 months of giving eggs away to family and about a month of trying to sell them before we were able to sell more than one or two dozen a week. You can also see if there is a health food store in your area. If so, maybe they will let you post a flyer if they won't buy them-those health food nuts go crazy over fresh eggs! Mina
