Rosie Won't Lay Eggs in Her Nest

I have a dilemma and I hope someone has some advise for
me. I have two pullets, one has gone broody and the
other is still laying eggs. Before my cochin went
broody both pullets would lay their eggs in the coop.
Now my hen that is still laying has found another spot
and will not lay her eggs in the coop. How can I get
her to go back to her old nest? Thanks in advance for
your reply.

Chickenleg:

When I find that one of my birds is laying outside, I empty the nest and keep her locked in the coop for at least a day, until she has made a nest inside. You don't want her laying in the nest with the broody however so make sure there is another nest for her. Once she has laid in that nest, replace her egg with something like an egg (golfballs work for me) to make her believe that her nest has not been disturbed. If you want, keep her locked in until she has laid a second egg in the nest. By then she will certainly not make another one in another spot unless she thinks that her nest has been disturbed. It is instinct for a hen to lay in the same spot and also instinct that drives them to find another nest spot if her clutch is tampered with. In your case you don't want the hen to simply find another spot outside.

Good Luck,
James

I had some chickens in my flock who weren't using the nesting boxes. One thing that helped was catching them in the act. I'd pick them up from wherever they were sitting and put them in the box. If they got up, I'd stick them back in. I'd also block the place they were using. (I'd lay a piece of wood there or something.) Both tactics helped and now they all lay in their boxes.
