Have to give my sweet 6 hens up for adoption, breaking my heart. But we're moving from Northern NM to Tucson, AZ. What's the best way to move them to their new home about 15 miles away? I don't have any type of dog kennel or cages? Burlap bags?? I don't want to cause them too much stress? Any other advice on how to make them comfortable during this transition??

Why not use a cardboard box? That's what we have used whenever we have had to move chickens or ducks-even put a full grown gander in a box for a short trip. If they are going only 15 miles, they should be fine in the box, and once its closed (with air holes of course), they settle down in the dark. Mina

15 miles is so short. Mina's right. Get a big box.

Louellyn, Several boxes with shavings in the bottom to keep them clean would be better, for 2 or 3 in each box, rather than 6 in one big box. They will hardly notice the trip, but will take some time adjusting to their new home. Be sure to keep them confined in a coop or pen for a while before letting them out, so they know where HOME is! Good luck with your new girls, CJR

Thanks so much for the advice. Unfortunately, I only have 5 hens to move now. My favorite girl died the other day. It's a mystery, she seemed fine, looked like she was laying, 1/2 hr.later she was flopped over. Maybe she knew I was giving her up for adoption??!!!
