I have 6 RIR's and would like to have a rooster, more for appearance than anything else. Do not wnt the rooster continually jumping on hens. Nor do i want the red spots in eggs.
Ronron, You cannot have a rooster with hens that will just walk around looking beautiful! But roosters will not cause red spots in eggs, that is a physical happening in the egg production process by the hen alone. And a small rooster is just as active as a large one!
Heh, my tiny Silkie roo coveres my big ole Buff Orpinton hen all the time. Sneaky thing will carry on like he's found something to eat, and when she runs over to take a look, he hops on board. Afterwards he acts like he just took the prom queen home, hehe. No matter what kind you get, he won't care that you don't want him acting like a rooster.
Hey Jade,
Heidi, your silkie roo will have no problem with the larger hens. I hatched out 4 silkie(roo)/sexlink(hen) chicks a few months ago. All 4 have the black skin (which I'm told means they are female), all have feathered legs and crests and 3 have 5 toes. They are the cutest chicks! Mina
Would a small rooster accomplish what i would like to?
Would appreciate any suggestions you have.
Thanks in advance, Ron

If you like their appearance, why not get a colorful trio of Bantams of a breed you like,(even bantam RIR) They would require a separate pen and coop, but are a lovely addition to a poultry yard. You can have the best of both worlds! CJR

Check out my question on "How do I merge my chickens?"under the Poultry Management section. Can my Silkie mate with my dual purpose hens? If so, will the chicks have the black skin of the Silkies?
Has your hen hatched any chicks from her love affair??
