We live in Montana and bought three heavy breed baby chicks from a local ranch store about 5 weeks ago (RIR, Barred Rock, Laced Wyandotte). They have had feathers for about 3 weeks now. We keep them outside during the day but they like to come into "their box" in my kitchen at night. My husband has been busily building a coop in our yard and am wondering when we can send them out there permanently.
My 6-8 weeks old bantams are outside in a coop now, but had a light on at night during the coldest nights--now they don't need it because the house gets nice and warm during the day and is insulated, so holds the warmth overnight quite well, if the windows are closed. Also, there are quite a few to pile up and keep warm. They will roost when nights get warm (if they ever do?? I am in Montana, also, and what weird weather!!!Hot, Cold, Cold, Hot and no rain!!
