clipping hen beaks

The Classroom @ The Coop: management archive 2: clipping hen beaks

For some reason our ten hens have started pecking each other. One had to be removed because the pecking had drawn blood and she was an automatic target for the other chickens. I have heard that clipping the end of the beak will end this problem. Is this true and how do you trim them? Do you use something like a dog or cat tonail trimmer? How much do you trim? Any information will be appreciated. Thanks

You can use dog toe-nail clippers. I have never trimmed one of my chickens beaks my self but I have heard that you should just trim off about 1/8 of an inch. If you trim off too much the beak will bleed.

Debeaking is done under conditions which promote cannibalism. If you have the correct ration and enough room for your hens, this will not be necessary. Dabbing some pine tar on the picked place will stop the picking without having to cut beaks.

Thanks for the help. We'll try pine tar first as this seems more natural.
