I have a very pampered, small flock,10 chickens, mixed breeds. I now have two roosters to many, they are like pets, I love them. I have tried to find homes to no avail. My chickens have a coop and large fenced yard if I let the roosters loose, will they just be miserable and constantly want back into the enclosure to be with the hens of will they roam contentedly? Please help!
Gallina, We tend to give chickens our own feelings and emotions, and while they have the same basis, they cannot control theirs, while we can! There is no reason not to pen roosters by themselves. Happy? If he crows, you can assume he is happy. Maybe? But they will be restless, can't help it, but there is no harm for them to be kept separately, they will live as long, and you can rotate them, if you feel they will be "happy". They will want to get back to the hens, but when they find they cannot--after a time--they will also enjoy their liberty, and will look for other things. Chickens do not get miserable (even the hens that are kept in small pens for laying). They accept their lot in life better than we do! So you will have to work this out and I am sure you can! CJR
