We have 18 chickens and no rooster. Some times my wife and I leave the house for 5 days to a week. The chickens are fed and watered with automatic systems, However, the eggs stay in the nests. Some of the nests have broody chickens. When we get home some of these broody hens will have 6 to seven eggs under them. will it be safe to eat these eggs after they have been heated up by the broody hens?? How long after the hens have been sitting on the eggs would it still be safe to eat the eggs?
Since your eggs are not fertile and there is no developing embryo, there is no harm in using the eggs--all of them are not 5 days old and kept warm. Just use for baking or cook well (Janet Stromberg's book). I think she suggested up to 6 days, still edible and safe. (me, I have so many eggs, I would probably dump them.--but wouldn't if I had no others.)CJR
