I was told that the color of the egg a chickens lays depends on the type of chicken and the color of their ear lobes. I thought this was dumb, until one of my pullets layed her first egg. Her sister has been laying for a week now and they lay different colored (or should I say shades) eggs from each other. The one with red ear lobes lays medium brown eggs with tiny white dots, and the other one with whitish ear lobes lays a rosy creme colored egg with tiny white dots. Is this just a coincidence? One last thing, I'm going away for two weeks and my family is taking care of my chickens. I let my chickens free range whenI'm home, but they aren't able(or willing) to catch (guide) them back in. I have six chickens, split into two per coop ( for who they get along with and for food restrictions for my cornish x). Their coops are about 8x4, 9x3, and 8x3. Are these big enough for them to stay in, or do I need to get someone who IS willing to let them out? Thanks in advance.
Your coops should be big enough for some temporary confinement if the pullets are comfortable in them. If they have shade and their feed and water, they should be fine. Better they should be in than to spend the night outside where predators can bite.
