Millipede VS Fat Red Hen

The Classroom @ The Coop: management archive 2: Millipede VS Fat Red Hen

Chicken won! But not without battle scars. Had I not seen this with my own eyes I wouldn't have known what was wrong with my hen. When she bit into the insect she acted like she had been stung, made a noise and backed away shaking her head. She then proceeded to stumble arround opening and closing her mouth acting ery disoriented. I went over, saw the broken millipede, realized what had happened, and decided to take her into the house and wash her face. She had mucus coming from her nose and going down her (chin?) under her beak and it was on her back where it had been stung when she was shaking her head. I irrigated the area with a solution of baking soda and water, then rinsed with plain water. I put bag balm on her beak when I was done. The area arround and below her nostril looked white and was bleeding a little. When I returned her to the run she continued to act confused, and walk funny, wandering arround. She slept for a while, I was afraid she was going to die, as I knew some milipedes use cyanide as a repulsing agent. She continued to improve and was eating and acting normal two hours later. This happened yesterday and today although she is acting completely normal the area still looks injured and she still has a runny nose.

Glad that she recovered. My chickens seem to already know not to peck at the millipedes and certain insects. I had no idea that the millipedes would have that strong of an effect on the chickens!
