I am looking for a large breed that will be the best at setting on the eggs. My bantams just aren't big enough. Is there a particular breed that will set for me next summer?
There are several large breeds that do well as broodies, my personal experience is that wyandottes and rhode island reds are excellent for this, but I'm sure it depends on the strain. Just keep in mind that you can't set small eggs under a large hen, she will unintentionally break the eggs when she comes and goes from the nest.
Cochins make great mothers, and they are very big birds.
I would not bet on just one Cochin. Although they are supposed to be good brooders, not all of them set. My Cochin is the only one who never sets and turns out to be a very steady layer. My Australorp, who should be a very good layer, does nothing but set. Who can tell?
Thank you so much for your help. I will have to order some of those breeds and raise them to set for next spring. Anyone else with suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks

As for brooding bantam eggs, I would not worry so much about the eggs which are quite strong, but more about the tiny little chicks under a huge hen.
Good luck. Anny.
