pullets or hens?

I was wondering when pullets become hens. Three of my chickens are 26 weeks and 24 weeks. They are female. Are they pullets still or hens. I've heard two things. One, they become hens when they lay their first egg...and two, they become hens when they turn a year old. Which one is true?

When they are a year old they are hens, when they lay eggs thewy are still pullets.
