I have three chickens that I hatched in my classroom last year who have become my pets. I presently live on an island where my birds free range all day and are closed up in a coop at night. The only predators here are hawks and stray dogs. My concern is I'm moving to Vermont in the fall and am wondering if I will be able to still let them free range or if I should keep them fenced in so that they will be safe. Any advice would be appreciated.
Chickenleg, Keep them penned until you size up your new area. All kinds of predators are at any location, so just plan to keep them safe night and day until you either feel comfortable about them free ranging, or you will know that they will require a permanent pen, maybe covered on top, also--and perhaps have some free time, when you are with them. It's our call about their safety, and you will want to be sure! Good luck, CJR
