I am wondering how to classify a Silkie. Is it a Bantem or is it a Standard? Or Silkie seems to be a good size, and lays a nice size egg. Our other bantem lay very small eggs. Thanks!
Chip88, The Silkie is a Bantam. Actually different Bantam breeds come in a lot of different sizes. It would take 2 or 3 of my Dutch Bantams to weigh as much as a Silkie. And even Silkies vary somewhat in size. Of course, they look bigger with their lovely plumage! And the Silkie is a "true bantam" with no larger counterpart. (Yes, I know they are classified as a Standard breed in England, but really are not that much larger than ours--and now England is breeding some smaller ones, which they are calling Bantams). But ours are all Bantams. They do lay a nice size egg--and can hatch 10-15 of my Dutch Bantam eggs, while my little hens can cover just 6 or so. CJR
Thanks Cjeanr, It sure gets confusing trying to figure all these breeds of poultry out!For a bantem, they have really nicew sized eggs. e have 1 silkie, but my daughter has enjoyed her so ,, we plan to add a few more. They are a very gentle bird and great for showmanship.
