I was just reading a conversation that suggested not to give raw eggs to dogs. Why not? Will it hurt the dogs? I have been giving our dogs and puppies our extra eggs. I hope it won't hurt them too bad! They're gonna be dissapointed when I stop!

Anonymous, My vet gave me this information. I can't remember just what the raw egg white does--will ask him again when I take my cat in for his boosters this Fri, but I think it coats the intestines and interferes with absorbtion of other nutrients in their food, in other words, wastes what you feed them. Don't stop feeding eggs, just hardboil a big kettlefull at a time and feed them 2-3-4 at a time, peeled, of course, according to size. My 16 year old cat waited at the refrigerator every morning for her egg--they're okay for cats. And my border collie gets 2 hardboiled eggs a day--CJR

The problem that a friend of my had was that his dogs started realy enjoying the eggs. Since his birds roam free then sometimes come in to lay the eggs, his dogs started following the chickens in search of eggs. The dogs never harmed the chickens, they just savor the flavour of the yolk, no joke.

There is a M.A.O inhibiter in an enzyme contained in the albumen of raw eggs that is neutralized by heat.If fed to canines for an extended period they will indeed cause nutrient absorbtion problems.Like all animals though the effect will be greatest on the dogs you value the most.Old farm mutts eat eggs for years and valuable purebreds will often show symptoms in a surprisingly short time.Has to do with Hybrid vigor. It's best to not feed raw eggs to your dog, even if you notice no ill effects. Salmonella is a concern for humans but not for dogs.Wild canids eat eggs and raw meat with immunity. If you boil the eggs, feed shell and all, just crumble or smash the shell with the rest,If you fry the eggs it's alright to include the shell as well,it's all calcium. Also good to feed the shells back to your chickens, crumbled beyond recognition of course.
