Neighbor needs a rooster....

The Classroom @ The Coop: genetics archive: Neighbor needs a rooster....

I am in Mid-MI. My dogs just got the neighbors' rooster
(sigh) I would like to replace it for them (they are really nice people). Thety said it was a red rooster and a was fighting cock with long spurs. I had never seen him and haven't any idea where to get a bird like this. Any ideas? They said their hens are "hillbilly" birds from down south??? (sigh)
I got my hens from the feed store and know just enough to know I haven't any idea what kind of birds my neighbors mean. (sigh and groan)
Know anyone that wants a dog?

It's probably a Rhode Island Red.

If your neighbor had a red fighting cock, it would definitely NOT be a Rhode Island Red, which is a domestic production bird. However, they might like a RIR, but don't count on it--they are nothing alike. Look for Old English Large fowl, or just some kind of red game cock.
